February 13th, 2020
Hello 6th grade parents,
We have made it to Mid-Winter Break! This year is flying by. I hope you all have time to enjoy each other this long weekend! We will remind students when they get back about our behavior expectations. It helps if you too can remind them to be safe, respectful, and responsible each day.
BINGO BASH and BINGO BLAST
Mark your calendars for Friday, Feb. 21, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 pm. It’s your chance to drop off your kids for a night of fun while you enjoy a break. Kids enjoy pizza, snacks, prizes, music and, of course, lots of BINGO!! The sign-up link Sign up here is live via the efc.
Holy Rosary students look forward to this event all year. “Bingo with the Teachers” has been the highest grossing auction item for the past 10 years!!!
Students in grades K-4 will gather in the gym for Bingo Bash. Tickets are $30.00, all-inclusive. Students in grades 5-8 will gather in the school hall for Bingo Blast. Tickets are also $30.00, all-inclusive. BILLED THROUGH FACTS.
Both events occur simultaneously from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm so you can sign up all your HRS children and enjoy some time to yourself *However, please be sure you or a designated adult signs your child in and out of the event!! We encourage carpooling, due to the large number of attendees. THANK YOU for your help on this matter.
Sign up all your children at once using this link from the efc: Sign up here! (no paper sign-ups this year). Also, we WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE WALK-UP REGISTRATION. In fact, Bingo Bash/Blast registration will CLOSE on Saturday, February 15th in order for staff to have an accurate count in so we can prepare food, prizes, etc. THANK YOU!!
Math (Mrs. C): We just finished Chapter 7, Equations, and everyone did amazing on the test. We will start the next chapter, Functions and Inequalities, when we get back from Mid-Winter Break. Students will have an ALEKS day tomorrow in class. Reminder we have an ALEKS check on Wednesday, February 19th.
Math (Mrs.H): Next week, we have a short week. We will be continuing our work with solving equations and inequalities. Also, the kids got the guidelines for the pi project. They have an individual part due on Tuesday, Feb. 25th. The group project will be due on Friday, March 13th. This is the day before pi day (3.14) since it falls this year on a Saturday. The kids will have all of these details. Looking forward to seeing all of the cool finished products!
Math (Ms. S): Math: Students have enjoyed exploring the world of equations in our new chapter! We have completed lessons 1-3, which means it is a nice time for a Check-In. Tomorrow, students will receive their graded homework from the first three lessons, as well as a study guide for the Check-In. We will complete the guide in class. Students will be prepared to take their Check-In the Wednesday we return from break, I will be giving a quick run down prior to handing it out. They are confident, but if you have a moment of free time encourage them to look over their materials this weekend, even just Tuesday night! Our next Aleks Check-In is 1.5 hours, 90 minutes, and will be due next Friday, February 21st.
Science: Students will explore what soil is made up of and what causes differences in soil and how water shapes the earth’s surface.
Social Studies: We are learning about Chapter 9, Daily Life in Ancient Egypt. This Chapter will focus on the Egyptian Social Classes. Each Nome group decided to make each member from a different social class. Then each social class group will work to plan and teach the class about their social class by doing a dramatization. Presentations are on 2/12. (Specific instructions for the dramatizations were handed out to each group.) Students are working on the Interactive Notebook reading notes pages 66- 70 for homework which are due on 2/19. We will have the test for this chapter on 2/25. The study guide will be passed out on 2/13.
ELA: We wrapped up The Giver with our last comprehension and vocabulary test today. Students will have 2 more in class activities next week and the week we start our poetry unit all having to do with The Giver. Be sure to sign the permission slip that came home last week so your child can watch The Giver in class the week of Feb 24th. The Giver is rated PG-13 and I need your permission to show the movie. Common Sense Media has a very good write up on the movie.
Please be sure your child has picked out their next independent book to read. I will be assigning the next book report next week. This report will be due at the end of March and students will have a few class periods to work on it.
Last week I assigned a project that will be due on March 9th. In The Giver, Jonas was frustrated because he did not know his grandparents or anything about his true
family. Students will now will have a chance to dig into your family history, because unlike Jonas, you can! Students will be building a family tree and memory book to learn about their own family. I handed out detailed instructions in class. If there are any questions please feel free to contact me. Students will have 2-3 days to work on this in class later this month.
********* If your child has an ELA test grade for the Giver unit that is below a 70% they have until Friday, February 21st to retake the test. After this they will not be able to retake any tests. Some of these tests are from the beginning of January. I have given them many reminders to study and retake tests. Quizlets for each vocabulary test are still on Google Classroom. *******
Religion: Sixth graders will learn about prophets. They will be able to describe the prophets of today.
