Boomerang!-February 6th, 2020

February 6th, 2020

 Hello 6th grade parents,

6th grade is receiving multiple daily reminders to remain safe, respectful, and responsible. We are actively reviewing our classroom, playground, and hallway expectations so there should be no question of what is acceptable behavior. This is a common time of year to see a flare up. I encourage each of you to discuss at home, “give an example of how you demonstrated respect today in _______ class”. Try and poke at their more challenging classes to see how they are reflecting on their behavior! “Did you find yourself struggling to remain safe today? When? Why?”  I believe having a nightly reflection involving our safe, respectful, and responsible language can help show unity between school and home. So, don’t be hesitant to discuss the harder moments maybe they did not show safety, responsibility, or respectfulness and hope that they can carry that conversation in their heads the next day as they navigate a new day of decision making. I am always here for any additional questions or concerns.

Homeroom Updates:

Midtri Reports: We will be sending a 1/2 sheet of paper home TOMORROW. You will need to check PowerSchool with your student this weekend and return the paper by Thursday, February 13th saying you are aware of current grades.

Mark your calendars for Friday, Feb. 21, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 pm. It’s your chance to drop off your kids for a night of fun while you enjoy a break. Kids enjoy pizza, snacks, prizes, music and, of course, lots of BINGO!! The sign-up link Sign up here is live via the efc.

Holy Rosary students look forward to this event all year. “Bingo with the Teachers” has been the highest grossing auction item for the past 10 years!!!

Students in grades K-4 will gather in the gym for Bingo Bash. Tickets are $30.00, all-inclusive. Students in grades 5-8 will gather in the school hall for Bingo Blast. Tickets are also $30.00, all-inclusive. BILLED THROUGH FACTS.

Both events occur simultaneously from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm so you can sign up all your HRS children and enjoy some time to yourself  *However, please be sure you or a designated adult signs your child in and out of the event!! We encourage carpooling, due to the large number of attendees. THANK YOU for your help on this matter.

Sign up all your children at once using this link from the efc: Sign up here! (no paper sign-ups this year). Also, we WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE WALK-UP REGISTRATION. In fact, Bingo Bash/Blast registration will CLOSE on Saturday, February 15th in order for staff to have an accurate count in so we can prepare food, prizes, etc. THANK YOU!!

Thank You: Thank you so much to everyone who donated to the goodie baskets. I have already heard from a few teacher friends at two different schools how much they LOVED their surprise. Here are a few pictures of the deliveries.

CYO Baseball: 7th/8th Grade Baseball. We are putting together a CYO baseball team – 7th/8th combo. This is CYO so if you haven’t played in a couple years, are already on a league team – no worries. Time commitment – (optional practices) Games on Sunday! We hope to have 15 kids signed up as conflicts always come up. Cost is $110, which includes Jersey and hat. Curriculum Updates:

Math (Mrs. C):  We are well into Chapter 7, Equations. This is a very short chapter so plan to have a test late next week or as soon as we come back from our Mid-Winter Break. Our next ALEKS check is Wednesday, February 19th.

Math (Mrs.H): We are currently working on solving equations (1-step, 2-step, variables on each side) and then we will apply these skills to inequalities.  This will help the students really cement the learning from the equations. I am stressing to the students that showing neat and careful steps in isolating the variable is very important.

Math (Ms. S): Our Chapter 6 Test is Monday, February 10th. Our next Aleks Check-In is tomorrow, February 7th (1/25-2/6), students must complete 1 hour in these two weeks to receive full credit. Next week, we begin Chapter 7 which is using computations to solve equations.

Science: Students will use their land and water biome booklets to prepare for a test on biomes next Tuesday. They have been given a study sheet in class to assist them. Next, students begin a unit in earth science. Students will discuss the theory of plate tectonics. They will also learn what tools have been used to predict earthquakes and volcanoes.

Social Studies: We are learning about Chapter 9, Daily Life in Ancient Egypt. This Chapter will focus on the Egyptian Social Classes. Each Nome group decided to make each member from a different social class. Then each social class group will work to plan and teach the class about their social class by doing a dramatization. Specific instructions for the dramatizations were handed out to each group. We will have the test for this chapter on 2/25. The study guide will be passed out on 2/13.

ELA: We are almost done with The Giver. We have all really enjoyed this book. It has so many amazing lessons to learn from. It has been fun to go through each of our activities and reflect on real life lessons. We have a comprehension/vocabulary test tomorrow, Friday, February 7th and one last one on Thursday, February 13th. Look for a permission slip coming home today to watch The Giver in class. The Giver is rated PG-13. Common Sense Media has a very good write up on the movie.
Today I assigned a project that will be due on March 9th. In The Giver, Jonas was frustrated because he did not know his grandparents or anything about his true family. Students will now will have a chance to dig into your family history, because unlike Jonas, you can! Students will be building a family tree and memory book to learn about their own family. I handed out detailed instructions today in class. If there are any questions please feel free to contact me. Students will have 2-3 days to work on this in class later in the month.

Religion: We wrap – up our lesson on the Wisdom of God with a 10-item test on Monday, Feb. 10, 2020. Sixth graders will continue to learn and reflect on the steps of making wise decisions.
